Letter from the Managing Editor

Fall has arrived with its reds and rains. Shorter days and December weather lumber our way. What better time to hibernate with an invigorating read?

Welcome to Bellingham Review’s issue 73, our sixth annual online issue. Inside, you’ll encounter the carefully crafted work of 20 different artists, including poetry, creative nonfiction, fiction, and hybrid pieces. Last fall, we began accepting hybrid submissions for the first time, and we’re pleased to be featuring some hybrid pieces in this issue, including work by one of the founders of Rose Metal Press, Kathleen Rooney, and Julie Marie Wade, winner of the 2014 AROHO/To the Lighthouse Poetry Prize.

In addition to hybrid work, you’ll find a special symposium on “The Kinetic Page,” in which a variety of artists explore and expand the boundaries of the page. Technology and literary arts marry to produce a stunning array of creative projects from artists Deborah Poe, Ander Monson, Amaranth Borsuk, and Eric LeMay. A little bit of magic happens as these artists engage with different mediums, from marginalia to handsewn poems to film texts. Prepare to be delighted, provoked, challenged, intrigued.

In these pages, you’ll also find photography by David Scherrer, whose Getty is the cover image for the issue. And you’ll get an inside glimpse into the writing mind of Sue William Silverman, interviewed by Ali Beemsterboer, as Silverman describes how she arrived at the concept for her second poetry collection, If the Girl Never Learns, through one intensely vivid dream that opened a door.
